Users Want Linux and OS Software From Dell

Dell has recently launched the IdeaStorm Web site where users can give input into their decision-making process. Since Friday's launch 66000 users have suggested that Dell should offer Fedora, OpenSuse and Ubuntu as free pre-install options. Along with this about 40000 users said OpenOffice should also be a pre-install option along with MS Works and Office. Most of the suggestions were that Windows should not be the default option and that Linux and free software should be supplied.
Visit the site to see the results for yourself or contribute your own opinions.

What can adding a second mouse do to help education?

Microsoft has announced the development of the ability to use multiple mice concurrently on one machine to control Office and other applications. They say this will benefit schools in developing nations where there are more students than schools can afford computers. This allows for all the students to be able to benefit from using the program.
There is just one problem I see, what good can come when 2 people are trying to control the same application. The most appropriate development would be allowing virtual systems to run off of one computer on multiple displays. This would allow all the children to use a computer and still keep the costs considerably lower than having multiple computers. This has already been done with Novell Enterprise SUSE, which has the ability to use one computer to create up to 10 workstations consisting of just keyboards, mice and monitors. This provides for a better learning environment than having 2 mice controlling one application.

10 Desktops On One Computer

A software solution for those who have a tight budget but need to provide computer access to multiple people has been developed for Linux. The Linux Desktop Multiplier has already been used to provide high performance Internet cafes at low costs at major technology conferences such as GroupWise European Summit and GWAVACon.
The Linux Desktop Multiplier allows users of SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED 10) to have up to 10 users share one PC. To do so you need to have dual-head graphics cards installed along with all the required keyboards, mice and monitors. It is said that the cost per user can be reduced in this way to about $99 per user.
More information about this can be read here.

The Linux laptop has come

Lenovo and Novell are teaming up to provide Thinkpad laptops with SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10. This will be available on the Thinkpad T60p focusing on engineers and high-end users. A 14-inch and 15-inch display version are expected to be released with the 14-inch starting at $3099.
Lenovo will also provide Linux support for these computers in a complete solution for users. This will help make the switch between a Windows environment to Linux a lot easier.
Expect the official announcement from Lenovo at Linuxworld today and the computers should start shipping soon after that.
